Comfort and Joy

I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will
give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.

Another asthmatic

That's right...we apparently have another asthmatic on our hands.  Just as it seemed Austin was starting to grow out of the asthma, Miller grows into it.  I woke up this past Tuesday morning to Miller crying, coughing, and breathing too fast and labored.  I tried calming him down and getting the breathing under control but nothing was working.  We headed to the Pediatrician's office who gave him a high dose of steroids and then sent us straight to the ER.

The ER quickly assessed him and his SATS weren't the best so they started him on breathing treatments.  Thankfully over time the SATS got better and he calmed down tremendously. IMG_1047
He was so scared that he couldn't catch his breath and I was a wreck.  I had 1 sick baby with a toddler in the ER with no family around.  Thankfully I called my friend Audra who was sweet to rush to the hospital to pick up Austin.  Austin had the best time playing with Sebastian.  The ER took chest and neck xrays to rule out pneumonia and something wrong with the throat.  All the xrays came back clear so they diagnosed him with asthma.

They started telling me everything I would need to do for an asthmatic child and I finally had to stop them and let them know I had been dealing with another asthmatic child for 3 years.  I was an old pro =).

Unfortunately we all got the cold/sinus junk Miller has so its been a rough week for the Spence clan.  Hoping this weekend brings much needed rest and healing to our family.

(You let your 14 month old put stickers all over his and mommy's face just to entertain him for 5 minutes. It's definitely not easy to keep a 14 month old entertained in a 12x8 room for 7 hours).

ER Visit #2

Miller has now been to the ER 2 times in his short little life.  He woke me up Sunday night at 12:15 barking like a seal and struggling to get a breath.  He had been sick with a cold and it very quickly turned into croup.  I quickly ran and woke up David and then proceeded to sit in the bathroom with the steam from the shower trying to help him.  David called a doctor he knew working in the ER and asked what he should do.  The doctor told him to bring Miller in because he sounded like he was really struggling.  We called our good friends the Williams and Ford rushed over to stay at the house with Austin as we drove very fast to the ER.

They processed us quickly and got him started on a Steroid and a breathing treatment.  It started to make a difference right away.

They kept us until the early am to monitor him and make sure he didn't relapse even worse.  It was SOOO scary to see Miller struggling to catch a breath and crying because he was scared.  I rode in the back of the car with him and watched him struggle while David flew there.  The poor Spence boys just can't seem to catch a break in the lung/breathing arena.  Thankfully he is starting to make a turn for the better but is still pretty pathetic.  He just has this look on his face like he feels terrible but is still trying to be sweet.  I am ready for him to be completely healthy.  I think its going to be a long winter of the boys passing things back and forth to each other. =(

Pictures from the ER

Look at my sweet baby in his hospital gown. They were rolling him to Radiology for a chest xray when David took these pictures. They put him in this terrible contraption to take a chest xray. He hated it!

Thank you for your sweet comments and prayers. He is doing a little better but really struggling with sleep. The steroids and albuterol he is on are making him jittery. I would appreciate your continued prayers for sleep.
